I. Article: "The First Prescription for finishing what
you start."

As promised, this issue marks the beginning of a
series based on my book, "Consider It Done: Ten
Prescriptions for Finishing What You Start." My clients
have used the Ten Prescriptions to help them:
--Finish their doctoral dissertation
--Lose weight
--Start and maintain an exercise program
--Stop smoking
--Write a book
--Complete a college degree
--Build a successful business

What is your unfinished project? Follow the Ten
Prescriptions and let's get it done!

Here's the First Prescription: What are the payoffs for
completing your project? Clearly visualize all of the
benefits that will come when you finish it.

Now write detailed, specific and emotionally charged
descriptions of what those payoffs are.

Here are some examples for weight-loss:
--"I look great. My friends compliment me on how good I
look. My spouse brags on me to other people."
--"I feel very slender. I can walk up the stairs and not
lose my breath."

Don't make general comments like, "I'll be healthier."
That won't trigger any emotion. Something like, "I'll
live to see my grandchildren finish college," is much
more likely to tug at your heart.

Here are some possible payoffs for completing your
dissertation:

--"My Ph.D. degree qualifies me for a highly paid
consulting job. I have a wonderful new home, and my work
makes a valuable contribution to society."

--"My high school guidance counselor didn't think I could
get through college. My Ph.D. will prove him wrong."

Your payoff list is the fuel to keep you working until your
project is completed. Use it to overcome discouragement.

II. Weight loss tip:

In the last issue I suggested that you write down
everything you eat. No changes in your eating habits were
required. The goal was to make you more aware of what
and how you eat. This awareness is an important first step.

Even if you're not ready to start a structured weight loss
program, you can get into the habit of consistently
recording your food intake. It should take less than two
minutes a day.

Now here is the tip for this issue: Drink at least six
glasses of water a day. If you're not crazy about water,
you can substitute non-caffeine beverages for three of them.

Why drink so much water? First, it will help you feel
full. Second, as you lose weight, you'll be burning fat,
and you'll need the water to flush it out. In my own
efforts to control my weight, I have found that I do much
better when I drink my water.

That's it. Drink your water and write down everything
you eat. I'll share the next tip in the next issue.
