“The Secrets of Change—Emotional Arousal”

I have been reviewing the Nine Processes of Change as defined
by Prochaska, Norcross, and DiClemente. People who successfully
change their behavior make use of the following:

1. Consciousness Raising
2. Helping Relationships
3. Social Liberation
4. Emotional Arousal
5. Self-Reevaluation
6. Commitment
7. Countering
8. Environmental Control
9. Rewards

Today, we will be talking about Emotional Arousal. Earlier when
we discussed Consciousness Raising, I mentioned that an
essential ingredient to behavior change is knowledge. It’s the
job of the physician and diabetes educator to provide their
patients with the information they need to make good decisions.

However, just information alone might not be enough to stimulate
change. Change is difficult and scary and most of us resist it.
To get past this resistance, our emotions have to get involved.

Sometimes it takes an upsetting event to get us motivated.
After a neighborhood walk that left me winded and exhausted,
I knew that I had to lose some weight.

People don’t quit smoking by reading the warning labels on the
cigarette packs. They quit because they’re fed up with the
cough or because someone they love is diagnosed with lung
cancer.

So, are you passionate about making positive changes in your
life? Has anything stirred your emotions enough to make you
want to change?

If not, it might help to really think about the consequences of
not changing. Picture these consequences clearly. Do they
distress you enough to motivate you to change?

Whatever it takes, get your mind and your heart working together
and you’ll be well on your way to positive change.
