“The Secrets of Change—Social Liberation”
I have been reviewing the Nine Processes of Change as defined
by Prochaska, Norcross, and DiClemente. People who successfully
change their behavior make use of the following:
1. Consciousness Raising
2. Helping Relationships
3. Social Liberation
4. Emotional Arousal
5. Self-Reevaluation
6. Commitment
7. Countering
8. Environmental Control
9. Rewards
The Third Process of Change is Social Liberation. This refers
to anything “out there in the world” that helps people make
positive change. For someone trying to quit smoking, examples
of Social Liberation would include warning labels on cigarette
packages, the nicotine patch, and no-smoking rules in
restaurants, theaters, and airplanes.
For someone trying to lose weight, Social Liberation might
include low-fat foods, aerobic classes, and support
organizations such as Weight Watchers.
For people overwhelmed with clutter, there are great books on
organization, organizational consultants, and The Container
Store.
Change is difficult and you might often feel like no one is on
your side. But think for a moment about all of the ideas that
have been brought forth to make change easier. You’ll realize
that you’re not so alone after all.
So, what examples of Social Liberation could you use to your
advantage? Are their tools, innovative ideas or organizations
that could help you get the job done easier? If you aren’t
taking full advantage of Social Liberation, are you willing to
start today?
