"Set goals for 2003"
Hello everyone and Happy New Year. I know that New Year's
resolutions are a common cause of humor at this time of year.
Everyone makes them and everyone quickly breaks them. What's
the use?
Here's what I have been doing for the past four years. I
develop a list of goals for the year. I set goals for my
spiritual life, family life, and professional life. I write
them in the first person, present tense. For example: "I
get aerobic exercise for at least 30 minutes at least 3 times
a week."
I have my goal list typed out and I keep it in a place where I
can refer to it on a regular basis.
Like me, you may find this to be a surprisingly scary exercise.
"What if I don't reach some of these goals?" "What if I don't
reach any of these goals?" "I'll be a failure."
To be honest, there are a lot of my goals that I haven't reach.
Some I've only had partial success. Some I've given up on
altogether.
Nevertheless, these past four years have been the most
productive, most successful, and happiest years of my life.
I am convinced that it's better to set goals and not reach them
than to not set goals.
Let me say that again! It's better to set goals and not reach
them than to not set goals at all.
I've got some suggestions on how to develop your goal list, but
I'll save that for my next newsletter. Keep on the lookout for it.

Here's a special offer. Anyone who would like feedback on their
goal list, can e-mail them to me at drhibbs@drhibbs.com. I can't
promise a speedy reply but I will look them over as soon as I
can and send you feedback.
