I. I want to welcome all new subscribers to our growing
community of people who are committed to getting things
done, And a special welcome to workers from the Centers
for Disease Control where I recently gave a presentation
on “Overcoming Procrastination.” It was a pleasure to meet
with you!
II. “The Courage to be Accountable.” For much of our
lives, accountability is something that is forced upon us.
As kids, we were accountable to parents. As students, we
we were accountable to teachers. As employees, we are
accountable to bosses. No wonder we often resist the idea
of accountability.
However, this type of accountability is different. To be
successful, we must choose to be accountable of our own
free will. Refuse to be accountable and you’re choosing to
fail!
Many of you know that I recently completed a book. Since
I was basically writing the book for myself, I had no agent
or publisher breathing down my neck to get it completed.
At the same time, I had a full clinical practice and many
family responsibilities. When would I ever find time to
write a book?
The answer was never until I paired up with a friend who
also had a dream to write a book. We became “accountability
partners.” We made weekly commitments to work on our
books and regularly reported our progress by e-mail. It
worked beautifully for both of us. Without accountability,
my book would still be just a distant dream.
So find someone who is genuinely committed to your success
and ask them to be your accountability partner. Ask them
to monitor your progress and give you constructive feedback.
A good accountability partner will be accepting but will
gently confront your excuses.
Many of my coaching clients use me as their accountability
partner. They would rather rely on a professional than
impose upon a friend or loved one. It’s a role that I enjoy
because I love to see people “finish what they start.”
