I. Welcome
This is the first issue of the Consider It Done Newsletter
by Dr. Stan Hibbs, psychologist and personal coach.
To refresh your memory, some of you may have attended the
MentorCoach workshop at Disney World in January. Some
may have attended my three-part workshop in Dunwoody, GA.
Still others may have heard me speak to the graduate students
at Georgia State University in June. Wherever you have come from,
welcome!
For my first issue, I have decided to talk about something that
we all need more of-persistence. Certainly our nation will need plenty
of it in the weeks, months and years ahead.
II. The Power of Persistence
Is there something you've started that you're discouraged about?
Is graduate school harder than you thought? Is that weight loss
program not going so well? Did you start your business with
great enthusiasm, but the recession is causing you to doubt?
If this is true for you, let me encourage you to quit! That's right,
I want you to quit. I want you to quit beating up on yourself.
Maybe pumping yourself up with affirmations won't work
for you, but you don't have to be so hard on yourself either.
Try this exercise: Imagine that you are speaking to your best
friend in the world. Although this person has flaws, you have
a deep respect and appreciation for his/her strengths.
Imagine what you would say to that friend.
What do they need to hear?
Do they need some gentle pushing?
Do they need encouragement to keep on?
Do they just need to hear that they're OK with you?
Now write down what you would say to your best friend
and say those things to yourself! Be as kind and
encouraging to yourself as you would be to your
best friend!
And just keep going! I have found that the closer
I get to my goal, the more nagging negative self-talk
kicks in. I just ignore it and move on! So can you!
I believe that persistence will be particularly important
to our country at this difficult time. We are all shaken and
we want a quick fix. There may not be a quick fix.
The military, economic, intelligence, and political
response to this crisis may take a long time. We will
all have to be persistent in our prayers and support for our
leaders during this difficult time.
Winston Churchill once spoke to a group of students.
They were expecting a stirring address by the greatest
orator of the 20th century. This was his entire address:
Never give up!
Never give up!
Never, never, never give up!
Then he sat down. That's all he had to say!
That's all I have to say to you.
God Bless you all!
Stan
